Hi, I’m Sam. I’m The Jolly Geographer. I live for all things geo, and I’d like to think this shines through in my work. I’m lucky to call my career my hobby, so I never really stop working!
I’m in my 30s (but still feel 25!) and I’ve sort of already been around the block. I’ve been involved in all four sectors, from a private-sector environmental consultancy to a marine conservation NGO. Building up my skills in the Civil Service, and learning from the best in marine conservation, it’s been quite the ride, meeting incredibly inspiring people and taking me to all corners of the globe.
So what am I trying to do here?
I want to use my skills and experience to bring geospatial (geography) to the masses. Sure, I’m not the only one doing this, but there needs to be more of us! In marine and forest conservation alone I’ve seen just how valuable geography can be.
From understanding the geographic patterns that help explain events, to visualising them on a map – the possibilities are endless. Skills such as remote sensing (using satellite imagery), GIS (Geographic Information Solutions) and use of novel technologies such as field-sensors and drones can generate a wealth of location intelligence to support your mission.
Below you’ll see what exactly I’m about. I’ve taken the idea of a Graphical CV and expanded it to include everything I fill my time with. It shows how me and my career have evolved over time to get to ‘The Jolly Geo’ that you see today. On this website (and on socials) I plan to keep you up-to-date on everything I’m up to, and everywhere I go. Whether you work in conservation, intelligence, the humanitarian sector, academia, whatever – if you want to know more, if you might need my help, get in touch! My details are here.
